Back to One by Sumeau
New Release - "Back to One"
by Kat Primeau
“Back to One” started as a happy tune in early 2021 when, unbeknownst to our band mates, Chris and I were pregnant for the first time. We held such joy and hope, a story song about our growing love was practically writing itself… until the pregnancy spontaneously ended. I couldn’t bear to also “lose” the song. Slowly, the lyrics were rewritten, and the piece became a way to honor our heartache. I recognized there was a good deal of secrecy around pregnancy loss, despite it being such a common occurrence, and I wanted to nurture and “grow love” around the pain. After experiencing recurrent pregnancy losses, it took a lot of courage to start over again (or go “back to one,” as they say in between takes on film sets). This song has been instrumental in helping me grow strength, acknowledge grief, and find healing. It’s release, five years after its initial gestation, marks the first Sumeau single since me and Chris’ five-month-old son was born. It is my wish that those who can relate may find some hope and comfort in it.
